I Go to Church to Remember I am Small.

Great is Thy FaithfulnessI go to church to remember I am small.
I go to church to remember we are vast.

I go to church to remember I am part of a whole body, a big world and an even bigger God.
I go to church to remember I belong somewhere right here.

I go to church to participate in the repair of my small world
I go to church to remember the repair of our large world.

I go to church to fall on my knees and find God’s eternal ways.
I go to church to enter into the mystery of God in community.

I go to church to remember: Many feet, many hands, many minds, one heart.

I go to church to close my eyes and lift my hands,
I go to church to worship together.

I go to church to lay down my cynicism,
And be taken up into hope.

I go to church to suspend judgment and remember how we are human together.

I go to church to remember I am someone,
but I am only one.

I go to church to receive wisdom in community,
To hug wise women
And welcome babies

I go to church to remember, always, I am part of something larger than myself.

______

We go to Saturday night services at Relate Church in Surrey, BC. Last night, I dragged my jet-lagged body off the couch and it was then that these words began to form in my heart. It would have been easy to stay home and say, “I’ve done church all week.” Because a week on Robben Island was church too. Truly. But I needed to put my body in a seat in my local church and remember the privilege of being part of this beautiful and ordinary community of believers.

My dear and beloved local church, congratulations on 30 years of ministry!

Beautiful! Since I’ve moved states and have started my church hopping journey, I’ve been trying to think creatively and critically as to what I should be looking for in a church. I don’t want to be comfortable and choose a church based on theological alignment… I want something more. I’m thankful for this post — it’s a reminder / reorientation / inspiration to what to look for in a church.

    Shalom!
