Mandela in Mandarin

From Nan Fe with love

My lovely friend Andrea sent me this picture she took at the SA Pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010.

It sits so right:

“We must use time wisely and forever realise that time is always ripe to do right.”–Nelson Mandela

And if you didn’t quite get that in English, read the Chinese characters. I love when my world collides like this.

(Thank you, Andrea!)

Question: I would love to hear some of your favorite Mandela quotes, sayings or thoughts on this remarkable leader.

Tomorrow is Nelson Mandela’s birthday and also Mandela Day. It’s a global initiative proposed by 46664 and the Nelson Mandela Foundation as a day to honour and celebrate Nelson Mandela and his legacy. Watch this space for more thoughts on that tomorrow.

My favorite Mandela quote is long, but my favourite part of the quote is that we fear, not that we are inadequate, but that we are greater than we know. That’s not it exactly, but close to it.

I love that one too, Frances. Thanks for reminding me. Irony is, while Nelson Mandela made it famous, thanks to his inauguration speech in 1994, it was actually written by Marianne Williamson.

    Here’s the full poem:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” –Marianne Williamson.

Aahhh, I have many favorites! One of them:
If you talk to [someone] in a language [he or she] understands, that goes to [the person’s] head. If you talk to [somebody] in [his or her] language, that goes to [the] heart.

I love that one, Michelle. Works so well with you.
