globalgirl Advent Adventure: Making Room

Idelette’s note: When I grow up, I want to be like Helen Burns. She loves people with her passionate, warm, strong heart and knows how to live a beautiful life. She goes wherever God calls her and then comes home and gathers her family–in every sense of the word–close. She is the perfect person to write about making room, because her life just gets larger and larger. And yet she cares about people as individuals and leans in closely. God is so honored through the life of this beautiful woman. I can’t say it enough times.

Making Room
By Helen Burns

I love those moments when I open my Bible and begin to read a scripture that is very familiar and yet it begins to speak to me in whole new way. This happened to me recently as I was reading 1 Corinthians 2 verse 9: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard,
 and no mind has imagined
 what God has prepared
 for those who love him.”

I heard a God-whisper: “Helen, do you have room for more?” I knew immediately it was an invitation to say yes and embrace a new opportunity that He had prepared for my life. He didn’t tell me in that moment what it was, but I knew He was asking me to enlarge my heart and make room for it.

Do you have room? Will you make room?

The story of Mary, the mother of Jesus is a story of a woman who literally made room for God. Though she couldn’t have imagined the enormity of what had been prepared for her to carry in her life, it all began with a “yes” to God.

“And behold you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and call His name Jesus…” And Mary said, “How can this be since I am a virgin?” And the angel of the Lord said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore also, the Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God… Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. (Luke 1: 31, 34-35, 38)

Pregnancy is a perfect metaphor for making room. Conception starts with a small seed … we can’t see what this child will look like or become, but we commit to the process without knowing every detail of the outcome. God is looking for those who are willing to s-t-r-e-t-c-h and grow in their faith even though they don’t understand the whole journey

A woman who is pregnant has some very identifiable qualities and characteristics. She begins to “feel” different, she starts to look different. She becomes very protective over what she is carrying within her. She becomes consumed and focused in her thoughts and daily preparations as she is making room in her life.

Though it takes time to prepare and time to grow, the birth of the promise is imminent and will soon happen, and life will never be the same again.

As women of God, we are made for this … to say yes to, and bring to life the heart of God into this world.

Reflect:
Word for today: Yes!
Activity: Take time today to get still enough, long enough to listen for a God-whisper.
Prayer: I pray that as you prepare for Christmas and the brand new year that lies before you, that you make room in your heart for God. I pray that you would quiet all the distractions and take time to listen attentively to those treasured whispers from Heaven. I pray that you would lay aside the excuses that so often surface and succeed in aborting the plans and purposes that God has for you. I pray that you would know and experience the wonder of birthing the purposes of God on the earth.
